Local nominee content with ‘a good loss’ – The Livingston County News

Mike Brown and Zac Decamp, accompanied by Brian Grunert and Annie Stoll, were in Los Angeles on Sunday for the 56th Grammy Awards.

Brown and Decamp’s album “Automatic Music Can Be Fun” was among the five nominees for Best Record Packaging.

More interesting than the Grammys, Brown said, was the Saturday reception for nominees, where Brown, Decamp, Grunert and Stoll were each presented with a Grammy Nomination Medal. The Saturday event also included the Grammy Technical Awards (significant for Brown, who is a recording engineer) and Lifetime Achievement Awards presented to the Beatles. Brown and his delegation got to see Ringo Starr accept the Beatles’ Lifetime Achievement Award, along with Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, the widows of Beatles John Lennon and George Harrison. Paul McCartney was not at the Saturday event, but Brown and company did see Ringo and Paul perform together — for the first time in five years — at the Grammy Awards the next night.

The 56th Annual Grammy Awards will take place this Sunday (January 25) featuring all of today’s favorite performers and then some. ALBUM REVIEW: “Geneseo” – Rochester City Newspaper

upload-8989692848322035156

Just leave it to road-weary, hardcore troubadour Mike Brown to come up with a way to give old-time music a space-age aesthetic. Known collectively as Geneseo, Brown and partner Zac De Camp have crafted an epic piece of haunting beauty that sounds something like Calexico or a folky Mazzy Star. It is stark and picturesque, and something you can get lost in fairly easily. The packaging shares in the music’s clever dichotomy of old and new with its eerie antique photos and all the liner notes covered in the same opaque silver film found on lottery tickets. This inventive packaging has earned Geneseo a 2014 Grammy nomination. Honestly, this disc could come in a dirty paper bag and still come off elegant.

Design and music converge to put indie record on the national stage – The Buffalo News

Early last week, Mike Brown received two important pieces of mail at his recording studio on the outskirts of Geneseo: a shutoff notice from the local gas company and an invitation to Sunday’s 56th Annual Grammy Awards.

That unexpected double-dose of good and bad news seemed to suit Brown, a proudly noncommercial musician who has spent most of his young career working happily outside the mainstream, just fine.

This year, the mainstream found him.

Local Band Up Against Heavy-Hitters At 56th Annual Grammys – Rochester Homepage

When the envelopes are opened and winners are named at this year’s Grammy Awards, a little band from Geneseo will have their fingers crossed.

Mike Brown has been a professional musician since he was 17, but he never expected this.

“It was never really meant to be a band, it was just me and him fooling around in the studio and coming up with weird noises,” he said.

That band, Brown and his childhood friend Zac Decamp, are now heading to the biggest event in the music industry.

These locals are going to the Grammys…they’re nominated! – The Rochester Insomniac

Because their Indiegogo reached $3,000, Mike Brown and Zac Decamp leave on a flight this Thursday for L.A. It wasn’t your average fund-raising campaign. It’s not for a tour, it’s not for an album pre-release, The Geneseo born duo, together in a band called Geneseo, released an album that is nominated to win a Grammy Award for “Best Recording Package.” And, frankly, deserving so.

It’s an album that wrote a song between a dance of art and music. First it was a CD, a collection of tunes the childhood friends had been working on over the years when the two were in town at the same time. Read on for more…
